What To Expect When You're Expecting, is a non-fiction guide, written by Heidi Murkoff to help soon-to-be parents. It was published in 1984 and has sold 20 million copies. Since it's not a novel, it's a strange choice to be adapted into a narrative feature film, but that is exactly what Lionsgate films is doing. Currently in production, starring Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz, it will be released, Mother's Day, 2012.
Any time there is an adaption of a non-fiction how-to guide into a feature film based around a storyline, it is safe to say that the work is a very loose interpretation. A perfect example of this is Woody Allen's 1972 satirical adaptation of of Dr. David Reuben's book, Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask.
Of course, What To Expect When You're Expecting, is not "expected" to be an absurd comedy. In fact, it's not yet public knowledge if it's a comedy, drama, or something in between. What is known is that it involves the stories of several couples who are expecting babies, for the first time.
The script was written by Heather Hach, and then was reworked by Shauna Cross, who wrote Drew Barrymore's directorial debut film, Whip It. The storyline is done in the form of interlocking, but independent, narratives. It has a number of similarities to the film, He's Just Not That Into You, including interlocking stories, and the fact that it too, was adapted from a non-fiction book.
There is currently slated a scene in the What To Expect When You're Expecting, that is creating quite lot of chatter on and off the Internet. Reminiscent of Blake Edward's 1981 S.O.B., where Julie Andrews created controversy by baring her bosom, Ms. Lopez is, reportedly, going topless in one scene. She is such a huge star, she certainly doesn't have to do that, but if she goes through with it, box office gross might double.
