U-Turn was an unusual film about a man named Bobby (played by actor Sean Penn) who is trying to pay off a debt to a group of criminals. Bobby is driving to California to payback the money that he owes and as he travels through Arizona his car breaks down near a little town called Superior.
This small city is filled with all types of strange and unusual characters which includes a wise old bum (John Voight), an untrustworthy sheriff named Virgil Potter (Powers Boothe), a borderline mentally challenged mechanic named Darrell (Billy Bob Thorton) and a jealous husband (Nick Nolte) who wants to kill his burdesome wife named Grace McKenna (Jennifer Lopez).
Bobby encounters each of these characters as he waits for Darrell to fix his car but his primary interest is with the lovely Grace McKenna. She flirts a lot with Bobby, leads him on and eventually has sex with him. She does this so he can kill her husband and steal his money. Bobby also discovers that Jake (Grace's husband) wants him to do the same thing to her.
The couple drives Bobby crazy with their strange demands and irrational behaviors. This movie didn't do well at the box office even though it was packed with an all star cast that included personalities such as Joaquin Pheonix and Liv Tyler.
U-Turn didn't do well at the box office though it helped to gain Jennifer Lopez more exposure during the time that she was establishing her career in the 1990s. U-Turn was one of three films that were released in 1997 where Jennifer Lopez had a starring role. Her performance in U-Turn didn't win her any good reviews though critic's didn't totally demean her efforts. Though this movie isn't one of Lopez's best achievements it has played a role with establishing her for future parts in upcoming Hollywood films.
