In the Cell, Jennifer Lopez plays Catherine Deane, a psychotherapist involved in a new treatment using a state-of-the-art machine that allows her to enter the minds of each of her patients.
Working primarily with a young boy, Catherine is thrown off guard when an FBI agent Peter Novak (played by Vince Vaughn), seeks her out in an effort to have her enter the mind of a serial killer, Carl Stargher, and discover the whereabouts of a missing woman that he had kidnapped and planned to murder before he had fallen into a comatose state.
The FBI has less than two days to find the missing woman and save her life. And it is in that same period of time that Catherine must enter the serial killer’s mind, gain his trust, and discover the location of the missing woman before her time runs out.
However, the serial killer is schizophrenic and although the vulnerable side of him as a little boy poses Catherine no harm, it is his higher self that could stand to capture her and keep her mind trapped within his world forever.
If she begins to believe what is happening to her is real, Catherine need only to pinch her arm and wake up in order to leave the killer’s mind. But even as strong a woman as Catherine cannot withstand the horrors that await her inside the killer’s mind and it is up to Peter to venture in and save her. But Catherine is a woman who believes in the good in everyone, even the serial killer.
She believes she can save the abused boy inside and as she attempts to do so by traveling deeper and deeper into his mind to reach that vulnerable part of him, she puts her own life very much at risk.
