Selena is based upon the real life and tragic death of Selena Quintanilla-Perez. Selena was a popular Tejano singer who rose to fame from humble beginnings in Texas. She was a small girl with big dreams, an even bigger talent and a winning personality, who managed to make many of her dreams come true in her short lifetime.
The role of Selena was played convincingly and touchingly by Jennifer Lopez, who recreates the life story of Selena for those who did not know of Selena before her untimely death in at the hand of the woman who was the manager of her fan club and her clothing boutique. Jennifer Lopez’s performance in Selena is commonly credited as the role which launched her into superstardom.
Before her untimely death, Selena managed to win a Grammy, had many Number 1 hits in the recorded in Spanish and was on the brink of becoming the first female singer to successfully cross over from Spanish to English music charts. She was poised to begin her tour to promote her first English album when she was shot and killed on March 31, 1995.
The movie begins with a grown up and successful Selena performing on stage to adoring fans and then flashes back to her humble upbringing as a young girl in Texas and the close knit family and musician father , played by Edward James Olmos, who helped to launch her into stardom.
