The 1995 drama film, my family, directed and written by Gregory Nava was Jennifer Lopez second movies role. The drama film stars Edward James Olmos, Jimmy Smits, Jennifer Lopez as Maria and Esai Morales as Chucho among others.
The movie follows a Mexican-American’s family three generations settling in East Los Angeles after migrating from Mexico. The tale is a narration by Paco the eldest son.
The film begins with a journey that took Jacob Vargas as Jose Sanchez one year on foot from Mexico to Los Angeles. He went to meet El Californio a distance relative born in Los Angeles before it became America. They became close friends and grew corn together. Jose gets married to Maria; a massive round up by the federal government results in government deporting Maria to Mexico. She comes back to America two years later with Jose’s second son Chucho.
Twenty years later Chucho kills Butch his rival in a knife fight after a series of events while he was dancing with his girlfriend in the dance hall. This seals his fate as he becomes a fugitive. One night Esai Morales (Chucho) gets shot by the police while Jimmy watches and as his brother said, Chucho lived in borrowed time.
Jimmy became enraged with Chucho’s dead and followed in his footsteps and becomes a fugitive. He marries Isabel to save her from deportation, though he did not love her at first. Later she becomes pregnant and dies on the delivery table while giving birth to their son, Carlito, this made him mad attacking the delivering doctor and steals from a store.
He gets jailed leaving his parents the responsibility of raising the son. After serving his time, he is release and finds his son mad at him. The film ends with jimmy moving to Texas with his son after reconciling. The film is intriguing about life, love and family.
