The 2002 romantic comedy film, Maid in Manhattan, with Jennifer Lopez starring as Marissa Ventura is a charming story about a woman who is working as a maid in an upscale hotel in Manhattan. She is the single Mom to a young son named Ty and they are living with her Mom in a less affluent part of the city struggling to make ends meet.
While she is in a hotel guest's room cleaning with a friend and co-worker she secretly tries on the guest's outfit just to see how it felt to wear something luxurious. She accidentally meets a charming politician Christopher Marshall, played by Ralph Fiennes, while she's wearing the outfit and pretends to be a guest at the hotel.
He becomes infatuated with her and a series of events begin to take place where she must keep up the charade of being someone that she isn't.
This is truly a charming movie and lighthearted. Jennifer Lopez does a great job portraying a woman who is working at a job to survive and take care of her son but has hope that someday she will do something more challenging and have a successful career so that she can give her son a better life.
Her personal struggle with the lies she is involved in and her mutual attraction to someone that she doesn't think she belongs with because they are from two different worlds is very genuine.
Her portrayal is a great example of how someone can feel inferior and not think they are good enough for someone else because of where they live or the type of work they do. The film, of course, has a fairy tale ending and they end up together after the truth is revealed and time passes and heals the hurt. Another story of how love can overcome all odds.
