Bordertown highlights the events and dreadful reality facing the residents of Juarez, Mexico; especially women. Gregory Nava writes and directs the movie so as to bring to light the tribulations of exploitation of cheap labor at the border town at the expense of the expensive imports that are taken to the USA. This is done through the North American Free Trade Agreement at the United States of America and the Mexican border. The companies are able to make Mexican women work under deplorable conditions and for long hours and with meager pay to produce large quantities of products.
The media (Chicago Sentinel) plays a significant role in exposing this story where Jennifer Lopez is sent as an undercover reporter to the border town. J-Lo experience firsthand the tribulations of the women who have been exploited, abused and even brutally killed. One worker screen name Eva is assaulted and raped while leaving work since she is the last in the bus; but luckily she is able to escape.
Jennifer Lopez acting as Lauren Adrian is sent to Juarez to probe murders; where she meets Antonio Banderas acting as Diaz (ex-boyfriend) an editor of the El Sol de Juarez a local daily. J-Lo, Diaz and Eva meet so as to pin down the murderers and expose them to be prosecuted. She is able to take the risk and follow the paths of Eva but is not lucky since the police do not appear as planned; however she is able to escape and flee.
The situation is further worse when Diaz is shot dead and Eva gives up on the testimony she had accepted to present earlier. Eva also tries to escape to the US with a truck accompanied by others but is caught and brought back to Juarez. Afterwards Eva is convinced by J-Lo (Adrian) to testify which she accepts; however the Chicago Sentinel does not publish the story due to political pressure. Adrian is so angry with the editor that she quits and goes back to Juarez and takes over as the El Sol de Juarez editor where she publishes the story.
The main cast includes Jennifer Lopez (Adrian), Antonio Banderas (Diaz), and Maya Zapata (Eva); supported by Martin Sheen (Morgan).
