I thought that I had seen every movie that Jennifer Lopez was in, but I was wrong. I was in the video store the other night and come across Angel Eyes from 2001. Lopez was not only in the movie, she was indeed one of the two stars.
I have to say, this is not a typical Hollywood formula movie. If that is what you need, then Angel eyes may not be your cup of tea. However, if you want to watch what might just be Jennifer Lopez' finest dramatic acting role, to date, then you will definitely want to see it.
The DVD showed the promotional trailer for the film, and it was purposefully deceptive. Anyone who went to the theater based on the trailer, might have very well come away disappointed. I can't imagine why the producers would play a trick on their audience, but the movie that was promoted in the trailer was not the actual movie.
It showed clips from the actual film, but it was done in such a way to give the impression that the story was about a supernatural relationship about beings from two different worlds. Even the title, Angel Eyes, is part of the deception. The story actually is quite grounded. Both characters are definitely of this world.
Lopez' co-star is Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ (2004), Frequency (2000). He plays an enigmatic character, named Chase, who is always doing good deeds, taking nothing in return. He happens along at the perfect time, to save her life from a would be cop killer. (Lopez plays hardened Chicago police officer, Sharon Pogue.)
They go on to form a romantic bond that is intriguing to watch on multiple levels. The love making scene, although not graphic, is, by far, the steamiest thing Jennifer Lopez has ever done on film. If you appreciate fine acting and movies about realistic relationships, you will definitely find this worth your while. If you're expecting a romantic comedy, you surely won't find it here.
